Survey: Patient Needs, Preferences Drive Health Care Food Service Programs

Survey: Patient Needs, Preferences Drive Health Care Food Service Programs
In a recent survey conducted by Datassentials, over 200 healthcare operators and 1,000 consumers shared their opinions and experiences with food service in health care facilities and discussed the choices and challenges faced by both food service operators and the patients, customers and visitors they serve.  Of the food service operators surveyed,  86% reporting meeting patient needs as their top priority, with 71% making their primary focus controlling spending and waste.  Other important factors included having a profitable food service operation, and offering more on-trend menu items.

According to the report, 73% of consumers say they have some level of choice in hospitals and senior living facilities, and 60% report that the quality and the variety of the food influences where they choose to live or seek care. Seniors entering long-term care or moving to a senior residence are more likely to have a greater number of options, making food service a deciding factor.  The survey also revealed that overwhelmingly, patients wanted food to taste good more than they wanted it to be good for them. For hospitals and long-term care facilities, this presents the additional challenge of meeting benchmarks for nutrition and patient care while being able to honor personal taste preferences.

Automation of your health care food service operation can help your facility reach its patient care and budgetary goals by streamlining operations through information management and timely identification of issues that can cause productivity losses, lags in service and negatively affect patient satisfaction.  By implementing dietary office software from Vision Software, you can offer patients and residents greater control over meal times and menu offerings, leading to better nutrient intake and improved patient satisfaction. Room Service and Patient Menu Checking applications allow patients to order meals on-demand and request safe substitutions and additions.  Our Tray Tracking application interfaces with the Admission, Discharge and Transfer (ADT) system at your facility, ensuring that trays are delivered when patients are available and ready to eat, reducing waste and controlling costs.
