Key nutrition concerns surrounding cancer patients

Key Nutritional Concerns Surrounding Cancer PatientsCancer is a disease that can affect various parts of the body and have a lasting effect on an individual’s well-being. While there are forms of treatment that can combat cancer such as radiation and chemotherapy, these methods can also have an impact on nutrition. For example, nausea and vomiting are common after a cancer patient undergoes treatment. That being said, it’s critical for medical facilities to utilize nutrition software to monitor their patients’ specific symptoms, as well as how their eating habits change according to treatment.

In addition to using food service software, it helps if medical professionals make it a point to familiarize themselves with their specific clients’ conditions and needs. Here are some of the primary concerns that surround cancer patients in a hospital setting.

Weight loss
As the National Cancer Institute has stated, it’s not uncommon to see patients lose an ample amount of weight during the treatment process. Methods such as chemotherapy can cause a loss of appetite in patients. That being said, it’s still important for individuals to eat regularly in order to receive the nutrients their bodies need to recover. Medical experts should assess and record their eating habits before and after treatment has begun.

Digestive problems
In many instances, individuals who receive treatment for cancer experience digestive issues such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. They may also feel full after eating a small amount of food. However, nutrition therapy can help with these types of problems. For instance, inserting nutrient-packed shakes in between meals during the day can ensure that patients are still receiving the amount of vitamins and minerals they need to maintain their well-being.

Unusual taste
Another problem that affects patients who are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation is a change in taste. Foods that they regularly consume may now start to taste differently, which can encourage them to avoid these items in the future. Individuals may also start to notice pain while swallowing and sores around their mouth, which can take away from the eating experience.

Regardless of what type of cancer your patients are combating, nutrition software can help you keep track of each individual’s needs. In turn, you can provide the utmost care to people who are staying in the hospital. Using software can keep all of your data organized and tip you off to any trends that may be developing in the eating habits of your patients.
