Building Community with Excess Food

Building Community with Excess Food
Food waste is a major problem not just in the United States, but also all over the world. It’s shocking to think about the outrageous amount of perfectly good food and ingredients that go to waste every day in  healthcare facilities. It’s even more atrocious to think about that in relation to the millions of people worldwide who are currently suffering the long-term effects of starvation, malnutrition, or other physical or cognitive disabilities caused by lack of proper sustenance. Change cannot happen overnight, but it can happen. As long as there are good people willing to share the love and pass the salt, our world can slowly make the necessary evolution into a better more efficient society.

Lucky for us, the world isn’t completely doomed as there are plenty of helpful people looking for the perfect opportunity to shine as good Samaritans. Thanks to the incredibly hard working staff and other volunteers at Rush University Medical Center, countless hungry people living in shelters have better access to delicious and healthy food and meal options. With recent changes, they have eliminated nearly 45 pounds of usable food and ingredients from their waste per day, and distributed it to those in greater need, which has significantly cut down their overall waste to a mere 30 pounds in a whole day. In most cases this would cut costs, but their generous spirits have them stuffing food boxes for the homeless past the brim, canceling out any personal gain. Projects like this, sponsored by such humble people, have so many potential benefits on all sides of the spectrum. Even aside from the obvious cost cuts and reputation benefits, helping others promotes a deeper sense of community and can make you and others around you feel amazing, and feeling good is half the battle of healthcare.

Crushing food waste is an essential part of ensuring your healthcare facility is efficient and maintains fiscally responsibility. Even if you are unable to donate food to a local shelter or organization, at least cut your costs. Save money and offer better tasting, more nutritious meal options, keeping your patients healthy and satisfied with Vision Software.
